Spirituality of Aging

AWA Writing Group

with Susan Flynn

This is a writing workshop guided by Amherst Writers and Artists guidelines, focusing on the spiritual possibilities of aging. While daily each of us is getting older, our culture does not encourage aging consciously. This workshop will offer an opportunity to slow down, assess where we are on our spiritual journeys, using writing as one opportunity for spiritual reflection and psychological growth.

Participants will experience a 90 minute workshop offered by an AWA trained facilitator where two writing prompts will be provided each meeting, The AWA method will be explained and utilized, as it is a method providing structure and safety to the participants. The writing prompts are invitations to use writing to reflect about various aspects of aging. Some of the sources used to create the prompts are taken from the Inner Work of Age, Shifting from Role to Soul, by Connie Zweig, Aging as a Spiritual Practice, by Lewis Richmond, and Writing Alone and with Others, by Pat Schneider, and The Weight of Love, Pat Schneider’s final collection of poems.

Susan Flynn

Susan Flynn is a 77 year old woman, grateful for the daily opportunity to continue aging. She is a clinical psychologist, in her 47th year of private practice, a poet, trained in the Amherst Writers and Artist Method of facilitating writing groups, who uses writing as part of her spiritual practices. While losses are inherent in aging, those necessary losses can be a portal to the as yet undiscovered terrain of later life. This workshop is intended as a field trip to that land.
