Participants Speak:

I have pursued and received two advanced degrees and this is far and away the best learning experience I’ve ever had… and though I’ve received supervision as a marriage and family therapist, I have never had supervision of this quality… -TA

I did not recognize when I started how much personal transformation would take place. This program is not for the faint of heart! You have provided a space where I can meet my deepest self...I have learned spiritual courage. -CS

We are now accepting applications for the next 3 year Internship Program in the Art of Spiritual Direction which begins in September 2010 and ends in May 2013. Bread of Life has been preparing women and men for the ministry of spiritual direction since 1998. Many of these people are now practicing spiritual direction and leading retreats and other group offerings. Others have used the knowledge to enhance their work in ministry, teaching, health care, and other caring professions.

Bread of Life's Internship Program is founded on an integrative and holistic approach to life and experience of God. It is founded on the belief that the Mystery we call God is fully present in any and all human experience, and that our human vocation is to wake up individually and corporately to the truth and grace of that Presence.

This three-year intensive training program includes monthly Saturday gatherings and periodic weekend retreats that:

  • focus on the spiritual formation of the candidate
  • in a context of depth community
  • while building core competencies in the ministry of spiritual direction

While grounded in Christian faith and practice, this program cultivates the capacity to listen for the movements of Spirit in whatever tradition or life arena they arise.

  • Year 1 - The Art of Opening to God
  • Year 2 - The Art of Opening Sacred Story
  • Year 3 - The Art of Spiritual Direction: Return to the World

If you have questions, you are welcome to call the Bread of Life office, (916) 648-1803 and ask for a contact from Jim Peterson, our program coordinator.

Quotes from current interns and recent graduates:

I have pursued – and received – two advanced degrees and this is far and away the best learning experience I’ve ever had... and although I’ve received supervision as a Marriage and Family Therapist, I have never had supervision of this quality. It has been enormously helpful in working with directees.    Tanda Ainsworth, current intern

The love, concern, challenge, encouragement, gentle touch, passion and hope of my program mentors have made my life rich and new. Thank you.    Rev. Jeff Mitchell, current intern

I did not recognize when I started how much personal transformation would take place. This program is not for the faint of heart! You have provided a space where I can meet my deepest self... I have learned spiritual courage.    Colleen Sorocco, current intern

By shifting from trying to fit the internship into my life, I learned to live into the internship and its practices of spaciousness and contemplative being and found it brought openness and healing, expansion, and transformation. My life is not the same as when I'd begun… I am not the same.    Joan Byard, former intern

These three years of the Internship are the best investment I have ever made. They have been a time of tremendous personal and professional growth and discernment. They have offered me a depth of experience beyond anything I experienced even in my M.Div. seminary program.    Rev. Carol Carter, former intern

You start on this journey thinking it's one thing, but then you find it's not. If you keep your eyes open, you'll be surprised at what you see. If you keep your heart open, you'll be surprised at what you learn. If you keep your mind open, you'll be surprised at what you unlearn. Things won't be what you expected. If you step onto this path, keep open to surprises.    Tamara Chinn, former intern

To anyone considering this process, I would say that if they've heard God's call - if they feel that nudging in the soul that won't go away -- this Internship with Bread of Life offers an absolute and intense curriculum for the formation of a spiritual director. And along the way, transformation to spiritual director happens. I would give it my 100% recommendation.    Ann Dufour, former intern
