Every human being has a sacred story woven through the details of their particular life. The threads of God in one’s story may appear as a moment of connection to what really matters; a sense of meaning and purpose; a glimmer of hope that keeps one moving through a dark time; or the experience of being gloriously alive. Perhaps it appears in a longing for something more or in a disturbing question that keeps knocking on the door of awareness asking for admittance.
Every human being has a sacred story. The challenge is waking up to it, and beginning to live in growing connection to it. Holy listening – also called spiritual direction or companionship – is the art of listening for and evoking awareness of the ways God is moving in the everyday life of a person, community, or organization.
Many people appreciate having another pair of eyes and ears attending to their unfolding story. We all have blinders and easily slip from those moments of waking back into forgetfulness. An ongoing relationship with a director/companion helps a person notice, savor and respond to God’s presence and invitation in growing freedom and deepening relationship.
At Bread of Life spiritual direction is offered to individuals in regularly scheduled private sessions or in groups. A typical rhythm of meeting is once a month for an hour. The Path of Contemplative Dialogue is the means by which communal bodies or organizations can attend to the direction and movement of the Spirit in their corporate life.
Bread of Life’s spiritual directors have completed extensive formation for this ministry yet each spiritual director brings a unique mix of perspectives, skills, experience and training. Some are ordained ministers; others are lay people. Some take a traditional approach; others are cutting-edge in approach, techniques and tools.
